Robert Bonomo and Ryan Shields (@ryankshields) join Erin McCreary (@ErinMcCreary) to discuss efflux and porin mechanisms of resistance in Gram negative bacteria and their impact on antibacterial treatment.
Dr. Robert Bonomo, MD
Dr. Robert Bonomo is the Associate Chief of Staff for Academic Affairs and a professor in the Departments of Medicine, Pharmacology and Molecular Biology and Microbiology at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine. He also has an appointment at the Louis Strokes Cleveland Vice Chair for Veteran Affairs. His research focuses on the genetic and amino acid sequence determinants of the enzymes that inactivate beta-lactams, or as we affectionately refer to them, the beta-lactamases. He has published over 500 papers in this space and has been an influential fellowship director and mentor to hundreds of us in and beyond infectious diseases.
Ryan Shields, PharmD, MS
Dr. Ryan Shields is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Co-Director of the Antibiotic Management Program at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Ryan is a prolific research in the gram-negative space and has blessed the world with the first reports of resistance developing in real-world patients for ceftazidime-avibactam, meropenem-vaborbactam, imipenem-relebactam and cefiderocol.
