Dr. Katie Suda (@sudamonas) and Dr. Erinne Kennedy join Dr. Zahra Escobar (@zkepharmd) of the Breakpoints team to discuss strategies to improve antibiotic utilization and forge connections with our dental colleagues to achieve a common goal of improved patient outcomes.
Katie J. Suda, PharmD, MS, FCCP
Dr. Suda is Core Investigator and Associate Director of Clinical Therapeutics at the VA Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP). She is also Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Suda received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Drake University and a Master of Science in Epidemiology from the University of Tennessee. Her post-doctoral training includes a residency, a pharmacokinetics fellowship, and an infectious diseases and outcomes research fellowship. Dr. Suda’s research is focused on prescribing by clinicians and use by patients and strategies to improve medication use. This includes antibiotics and opioids, Veterans receiving care at multiple health systems, and drug shortages. She currently holds R01 funding from AHRQ and NIH and merit review funding from VA HSR to investigate drug shortages and prescribing by dentists. Dr. Suda has received prior funding from federal and non-federal sources and published more than 250 articles in the professional literature, including high-impact journals such as JAMA and Annals of Internal Medicine. She was the recipient of the ASHP Foundation 2024 Literature Award for Sustained Contributions to biomedical literature
Erinne Kennedy, DMD, MPH, MMSc
Dr. Kennedy works at Kansas City University College of Dental Medicine as an Assistant Professor and Director of pre-doctoral education. She has been a part of the American Dental Association (ADA) expert panel for developing the guideline on the Use of Antibiotics for the Emergency Management of Symptomatic Irreversible Pulpitis, Symptomatic Apical Periodontitis, and Localized Acute Apical Abscess. Alongside her team she helped create and release a state toolkit, website, and training specifically for oral health clinicians on antibiotic stewardship clinical practice. She is an expert spokesperson on behalf of the ADA for antibiotic use and stewardship in dentistry.
