Drs. Maria Mojica, Robert Bonomo, and Ryan Shields join Dr. Erin McCreary (@erinmccreary) for a Halloween special reviewing the scariest resistance mechanisms and baddest bugs – Burkholderia spp., Achromobacter spp., and Elizabethkingia spp. Never have beta lactamase enzymes and other complexities been explained so hauntingly well. Dr. Robert A. Bonomo is the Associate Chief of Staff for Academic Affairs at the Cleveland VA Medical Center, and is Professor of Medicine, Pharmacology, Molecular Biology and Microbiology, Biochemistry, Proteomics, and Bioinformatics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. His research interests include the mechanistic basis of resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics and beta-lactamase inhibitors, the molecular epidemiology of multidrug resistant gram-negative bacteria. He serves as an author on the IDSA guidance for treatment of gram-negative infections.
Dr. Ryan Shields is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Co-Director of the Antibiotic Management Program at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Ryan is a prolific research in the gram-negative space and has blessed the world with the first reports of resistance developing in real-world patients for ceftazidime-avibactam, meropenem-vaborbactam, imipenem-relebactam and cefiderocol.
Dr. Maria Mojica is a Microbiologist and Master of Science in Biological Sciences from Universidad de Los Andes (Bogota, Colombia). She obtained her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Case Western Reserve University under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Bonomo. Dr. Mojica is currently a Senior Instructor for the Department of Molecular Biology and Microbiology at Case Western Reserve University. Her research focuses on antimicrobial resistance, specifically mechanistic and structure-function relationship studies on metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs), development of MBL inhibitors, and β-lactam resistance in Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Burkholderia cepacia complex.
